Frequently Asked Questions

It is completely normal to have questions - feeling informed is an important part of feeling supported.

Below are answers to some commonly asked questions to help you feel more prepared and supported as you consider engaging in psychological care. If your question isn’t listed, please feel welcome to get in touch.

  • We understand that reaching out for support can feel like a big step and we aim to make the process as welcoming, respectful and straightforward as possible.

Your first session is a chance to get to know your psychologist, explore what has brought you to therapy and begin identifying your goals. Your psychologist will guide the conversation by asking about your current concerns, relevant background, and what you hope to gain from therapy. This helps to build a shared understanding of your experiences and needs.

You are encouraged to share at your own pace. There is no pressure to talk about anything you are not ready to. The session is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and get a sense of whether the psychologist and the approach feel like a good fit for you.

By the end of the session, you will usually have a clearer picture of your goals and a plan for how to move forward together. Your psychologist will also explain which therapeutic approaches may be most useful for your needs.

  • Our space is designed to support adult clients, and having children present can be distracting for everyone. However, we understand that sometimes this may be necessary, and you are welcome to bring your child if needed. Please let us know in advance so we can do our best to accommodate you.

  • This varies by individual. Some clients attend only a few sessions, while others continue longer-term. Your psychologist will work collaboratively with you to determine the best approach based on your goals and needs.

  • Prior to your initial appointment, you will receive an intake form via email which must be completed and returned. If you have a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP), please forward a copy to us.

While you may choose to note any concerns or relevant information to bring to your appointment, this is not required as all necessary questions will be addressed during the session.

  • Yes, all services at Kensington Psychology Clinic are confidential in accordance with professional and legal standards. You can access our Client Confidentiality & Records Policy here.

  • The frequency of sessions depends on several factors, including your current concerns, the therapeutic approach, and what’s manageable for you financially. As a general guide, we recommend weekly or fortnightly sessions for the first 6–8 appointments.

After that, many clients find it helpful to gradually space sessions to every three or four weeks. In some situations, more regular sessions may be needed over a longer period.

  • Sessions typically last between 50 minutes.

  • If you obtain a referral from your GP or Psychiatrist, they might send it directly to us and/or provide you with a copy of the referral to forward to us.
